Putao Trek to the Rawan Trails 6 Days / 5 Nights

This easy to moderate soft adventure trekking of the Rawan Trails presents the wilderness journey on the pristine lower Malikha River in and around Putao of the far north of Myanmar in Kachin State covering Namkham, Machanbaw, and Mulashidi villages to explore the region’s deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries, thrilling bicycle journey and incredibly beautiful scenery.

The cultural and lifestyle of tribal communities, the descendent from eastern Himalayan region comprising Hkamti Shan, Doolin Jimphaw (Kachin), white-coloured Rawan, Myanmar’s gypsy Lisu, Pigmy Tarong, hunting tribes of Htalu and Tibetan also to be observed.

The suggested itinerary is based on the existing domestic flight's schedule of Air Bagan for every Tue and Sunday for the year 2011/12.

 

Day 1         Arrival Putao 

Arrive Putao and transfer from airport to the Putao Trekking House. After a brief break, walk through the trails of flat valley of Putao and explore this frontier town of the jumping-off point for trekkers to the region’s deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries and snow-capped mountains in the eastern Himalayas. Dinner and overnight at Putao Trekking House.

 

Day 2         Putao - Htawadum - Namkham 

Early in the morning, visit interesting Putao market with local ethnic tribes by walking (approx. 10 min). Return to the Hotel. After breakfast, depart by jeep on the pebbled road to Htawadum (14 km, approx one hour). Cross Malikha river by long-tailed boat to visit famous Kanugmulon Pagoda. Proceed walking towards Nampandum through Salundum from Lona suspension bridge. A brief stop for lunch and continue walking to Namkham (5 km, approx 3 hours), a large Rawan village situated at the bottom of Namhti mountain range which is rich with the biodiversity of flora and fauna and fruits plantations. Settle in at the guesthouse for local home stay and walk around the village. Dinner and overnight at the local guesthouse.

 

Day 3         Namkham - Machanbaw - Mulashidi - Putao 

After Breakfast, start walk to Machanbaw(15 km, approx 6 hours), a small town with beautiful colonial style set up, through relatively low land terrain with occasionally ups and downs passing through some smaller villages such as Inwaingbaw and Inbubaw. A break for lunch at Machanbaw and visit "stone dragon" park by 20-minute walk. Cross the suspension bridge over Malikha river to Naungkhine, and take the jeep to Mulashidi Lisu village (35 km, approx one hour). Observe interesting lifestyle of Lisu tribe and enjoy beautiful surrounding with the backdrop of snow-capped mountains in distance. Return back to Putao. Dinner and overnight at Putao Trekking House. 

 

Day 4         Walking / biking tour to Hopaing area 

Breakfast at the Hotel. Commence the walking/biking excursion to Lonsut village through vast paddy fields and across Namhtun creek. Continue to walk through bamboo grove to Hopaing Shan village, visit beautiful Buddhist Monastery and explore village lifestyle of Shan people. Optional visit to some of the Lisu villages on the way back (total walking hour: approx. 3-5 hours). Dinner and overnight at Putao Trekking House.

 

Day 5         Malikha river boat excursion (easy)

After breakfast, depart by jeep to Naungkhine (20 km, approx one hour). Take the local fishermen boat at the jetty and sailing downstream in the Malikha river to enjoy the sights and sounds of the natural environment. Pack lunch at the sandbank and relax in the wilderness world having high reef with lush tropical evergreen forests. Return upstream by boat in the late afternoon and take the jeep to transfer back to the Hotel. Dinner and overnight at Putao Trekking House. 

 

Day 6         Departure

Breakfast at the Hotel. At leisure in the morning and lunch at the Hotel. Explore local market of Putao for some last minute shopping before  transfer to airport in the afternoon for onward domestic flight.
