Pyi Oo Lwin, Gokhtike Verdict & Hsipaw Exploration 4 Days / 3 Nights

From Mandalay through the scenic hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin with its colonial era architectural styles and features, exploration to the northern Shan State highlights the historic Goteik viaduct railway bridge; the interesting town of Hsipaw with the legends of the Shan Sawbwas and the ethnic minority villages in the surrounding hills; and the charming town of Kyaukme on the trade route of Mandalay and China.  

Day 1         Mandalay - Pyi Oo Lwin

Breakfast at the Hotel. Enjoy 2-hour drive through scenic routes to Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo), the former British hill station. Observe the architecture of its colonial brick and timber houses with British names, the old clock tower, and its local market. Sightseeing around the town in an antique horse-drawn carriage is also a must. Visit the National Kandawgyi Gardens, 
a lush green grass land dotted with beds of various multicoloured flowers, natural forests, tiers of lakes and lawns. Overnight at a Hotel in Pyi Oo Lwin.

Day 2         Pyi Oo Lwin - Gokhteik Viaduct - Hsipaw

Breakfast at the Hotel. Transfer to Pyin Oo Lwin Railway Station for an adventurous train journey passing over the Gokteik Railway Viaduct (approx. 4 hours) to Kyaukme, the charming on the trade route of Mandalay and China. This amazing Gokhteik Viaduct upon its completion in 1901 was the second highest bridge in the world. Disembark the train at Kyaukme and continue by car to the historic town of Hsipaw. En route, visit Bawkyo Pagoda, the most revered Pagoda in northern Shan State. Arrive Hsipaw in the late afternoon.

Day 3         Hsipaw

Early in the morning, visit interesting morning market with local ethnic tribes by walking. This market starts early around 3.30 am and closes by 6 am. Return to the Hotel. After breakfast, explore Hsipaw for excursion and trekking to ethnic minority villages in the surrounding hills. Enjoy wonderful sunset from atop Nine Buddha Hill (Koe Su Mountain).

Day 4         Hsipaw - Kyaukme - Mandalay

Breakfast at the Hotel. Return to Mandalay (approx. 205 km – 5½ hours) through the famous Burma Road between Myanmar and China. En route, explore Kyaukme, a pleasant town with a majority of Shan and Chinese and Indian traders. Visit local houses where families produce some local products. Proceed to Mandalay passing by Pyin Oo Lwin. 
Arrive Mandalay in the late afternoon. Overnight at a Hotel in Mandalay.

Monywa & Po Win Taung Expedition 2 Days / 1 Night

Expedition to the dry region of Sagaing on the banks of the River Chindwin featuring Monywa, a typical Myanmar town with some important pilgrimage sites of upper Myanmar, and the famous Po Win Taung caves complex with the richest collection of mural paintings and Buddhist statues, is the interesting extension tour from Mandalay. 

Day 1         Mandalay - Monywa

Breakfast at the Hotel. Begin the overland drive to Monywa in the morning (approx. 136 km - 3 hours). Visit Mohnyin Thanboddhay Pagoda, a Buddhist temple with a huge stupa resembling Indonesia's Borobudur dating back to the 13th century. A brief stop at Boditahtaung Pagoda which houses the largest reclining Buddha image in Myanmar.
A short break in the afternoon. Continue to explore some of the outlying sights of Monywa. Visit Kyaukka lacquerware village and Shweguni Pagoda, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Upper Myanmar. Overnight at Win Unity Hotel, Monywa.

Day 2         Monywa - Po Win Taung - Mandalay

Breakfast at the Hotel. Cross the Chindwin River by ferry and proceed to Po Win Taung by local jeeps. This extraordinary complex consists of 947 sandstone caves dug out of the hills and contains the richest collection of mural paintings and Buddhist statues in Southeast Asia. Continue a few hundred meters away to Shwe Ba Taung, which features unique pavilions cut from the sandstone and filled with Bubddha images. Return to Monywa in the afternoon. After a short break, proceed to Mandalay. Arrive Mandalay in the late afternoon.
